Psychology, Neuropsychology and Psychotherapy as an Integrated Approach

Filipa Rouxinol Psicóloga Clínica, Neuropsicóloga e Psicoterapeuta

Hello, I’m Filipa Rouxinol.

I am a Clinical Psychologist, Neuropsychologist and Psychotherapist. My work brings together two worlds that are often kept separate: neuropsychology and psychotherapy.

I work with adults, parents, children, teenagers and young adults who are seeking clarity, regulation and deeper understanding around emotional pain, anxiety, trauma, neurodivergence, learning difficulties or developmental challenges.

Neuropsychology helps us understand how a person thinks, learns, pays attention, regulates emotions and develops over time. Psychotherapy helps us understand trauma, anxiety, protective patterns, relational wounds, inner conflict and the parts of the self that are trying to cope, protect or survive.

My clinical approach integrates Internal Family Systems – IFS, Compassionate Inquiry (Gabor Maté), Somatic Experiencing, Polyvagal Theory and Interpersonal Neurobiology. I am certified in Compassionate Inquiry, Level 3 in Internal Family Systems and Level 2 in Somatic Experiencing.

This integrative approach allows me to look beyond symptoms and understand the person as a whole — brain, body, nervous system, history, relationships and development.

I invite you to explore how we support English-speaking adults, parents, children, teenagers and young adults living in Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia and nearby areas through psychology, psychotherapy, neuropsychological assessment and parental guidance in English.

Finding the Right Support in English

Living in another country can bring new opportunities, but it can also make access to specialised mental health care feel more complex. Neuropsychological Assessment in English

Specialised neuropsychological assessment in English for children, teenagers, and young adults.

A neuropsychological assessment helps clarify how a person thinks, learns, processes information, regulates attention, manages emotions and responds to academic, professional or daily life demands.

A comprehensive assessment can bring clarity where there has been confusion — helping individuals and families understand not only what is difficult, but why it may be difficult and what support can make a difference.

At Filipa Rouxinol Saúde, assessments are designed to understand the person as a whole. We integrate cognitive, emotional, behavioural, developmental and contextual information in order to provide a clear and clinically meaningful understanding of each profile.

Our assessments may explore areas such as attention, executive functioning, memory, processing speed, learning, reading, writing, emotional regulation, anxiety, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia and neurodivergent profiles.

The goal is not only to identify difficulties or diagnostic possibilities, but to understand how each person’s cognitive, emotional and developmental profile affects their functioning — and what kind of support may be most helpful.

For children and teenagers, this may support parents, schools and therapeutic planning. For young adults it may help clarify long-standing difficulties with attention, organisation, learning, emotional regulation, academic demands, work functioning or neurodivergent experiences.

Psychotherapy in English

Psychotherapy offers a space to slow down, understand inner patterns and develop a more compassionate relationship with oneself.

At Filipa Rouxinol Saúde, psychotherapy in English is available for adults and young adults seeking a deeper, integrative and trauma-informed therapeutic process. Our work may support people navigating anxiety, trauma, emotional regulation, life transitions, self-criticism, shame, inner conflict, relational difficulties, burnout or a sense of disconnection from themselves.

A compassionate, trauma-informed process for understanding anxiety, trauma, inner conflict and emotional regulation.

Our therapeutic approach integrates Internal Family Systems – IFS, Compassionate Inquiry (Gabor Maté), Somatic and body-oriented perspectives, Polyvagal Theory and Interpersonal Neurobiology. This means that we pay attention not only to thoughts and emotions, but also to the body, the nervous system, protective patterns, attachment history and the different parts of the self that may be trying to help, protect or survive.

Rather than focusing only on symptom reduction, psychotherapy is understood as a process of developing safety, awareness, emotional integration and a more regulated relationship with one’s inner experience.
